US COMPANY ENGELHARD SET TO INCREASE INVESTMENT IN EC

A US company  Engelhard  which produces the state of the art equipment for reducing harmful vehicle omissions such as carbon monoxide is 
set to increase its investment in the Eastern Cape by more than R700 million.

This was revealed in a meeting between Eastern Cape Premier Makhenkesi Stofile and the companys group Vice President Edmund Stanczak who 
is also the General Manager of the Environmental Technologies Group of Engelhard Corporation in Bisho this afternoon.Mr. Stanczak was 
accompanied by the Managing Director of Engelhard Technologies Europe which is base in Hannover  Germany, Dr Herman Fischer, Managing 
Director of Engelhard - South Africa Mr. Errol Stopforth and the Companys Human Resources Manager Nceba Mfini.

Engelhard established a plant in Port Elizabeth in 1995, which produces auto-emission catalysis for export to several developed countries 
where legislation compels use of appropriate technologies to limit carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen emissions.It is the 
one of the largest developers and manufacturers of automotive catalysts and supplies more than one third of the vehicles on the road 
internationally.

The companys interest was on getting reassurances regarding the sustenance of the Provinces political and labour stability as well as 
programmes for promoting investments.

Premier Stofile said the government is succeeding in ensuring conducive environment for more sustainable investments citing substantial 
increases of investments in the automobile manufacturing industry, which runs into billions of Rands.He also highlighted the high maturity 
levels of the labour force and relatively low crime rate citing even media reports, which said the Police are on top of the situation.He 
said: people are working and are willing.He said South Africas current development evolved from the understanding amongst the 
beleaguered parties themselves and has a strong constitutional foundation that guarantees stability.

Mr. Stanczak assured the Premier of their emphasis on using local human and physical resources as well as their reliance on training of 
personnel to be able to use the state of the art equipment which would ensure that products were internationally competitive.The company 
manufactures catalytical converters for exports and the expansion is meant to ensure that it meets increasing and future market demands.Mr. 
Stanczak described South Africas legislative environment as fair.He also extended an invitation to the Premier to the planned official 
opening which is expected next year.

The meeting is a sequel to discussions held by the Premier and the representatives of the company in Hannover Germany during Expo 2000.
